My daughter, Jovie Rose, has learned recently to seek out the moon and call out its name with an outstretched finger pointed at the sky. Part of growth and development, I get it, but I still find magic in the way children first begin to associate words with sights, learning labels, making connections.

I did the etching for these pieces roughly two years ago, and they've sat in a small dish on the corner of my work bench ever since. I had no idea where to take them or what they would become, though I loved the texture. When Jovie started up with "M" word, I knew it was time. This is the result.

With the expansion of a toddler's expanding vocabulary in sync with the pending solstice, I took the two and built a small series that, I hope, symbolizes all the mystery and magic that spans the from the simple thrills of childhood wonder to the awe-inspiring vastness that is space and time. Both make me, in the most humbling way, feel incredibly small.

The darker days of winter can be hard. The moonlight counters. The solstice comes promising brighter, lengthier hours on the horizon, and I stare upwards at the same shapes, the faces that knew those who came before me, somehow questioning everything I know and yet understanding my place within all of it.

Wishing you a peaceful end to the season. Always look up.
