What are the benefits to using H&H?
Save time, money, and space while reducing risk and creating cohesion across your designs.
Two products.... countless finishes.
H&H can be used alone or as part of a more elaborate finishing process. How you use Hone & Highlight™ will dictate your results. See below for details.
Mini vs Original
Dark finish
Prior to applying patina, these pieces were tumbled with H&H Original media for approximately two hours. This softened the textures and edges slightly to give a more worn feel to the metal.
RING: After tumbling, patina was applied. The piece was then rinsed well and dried before being sealed with Renaissance wax.
EARRINGS: After tumbling, beads were pinned in place and patina was applied to the earrings. They were rinsed well and dried before the highlighted edges were achieved using a sanding sponge by hand. They were then sealed using Renaissance wax.
note: beads and stones cannot be tumbled with H&H
Aged finish
A moody, muted finish that enhances textures and creates a weathered, antique appeal.
Following construction and final pickling/rinsing, patina was applied to completely blacken the metal. The earrings were then tumbled for approximately two hours with a mix of H&H Original and Mini medias to create a soft contrast. A few additional highlights were applied by hand using a sanding sponge. For the bird earrings, setting the turquoise stones was the final step.
note: all stones and beads should be added after tumbling with H&H is complete. H&H will leave your beads and stones matte, chipped, or broken.
Soft (satin) finish
Longer tumbling times with less patina create more contrast and moderate to aggressive smoothing of the metal's edges and surfaces.
Feather Necklace: No patina was used in this piece. Following fabrication, the necklace was tumbled overnight with H&H mini media to create softened details and a slight shine. Stones were then set and bezels polished using a pumice wheel.
No Dream Killers: Patina was applied to the pendant before tumbling overnight with H&H original media. The result was a high contrast surface with a matte finish. The gemstone beads were then pinned into place to connect the chain before the chain was also painted with patina. The entire necklace, beads included, was then tumbled for approximately five minutes in steel shot to add a bit of shine to the metal while preserving the patina on the chain.
note: tumbling beads and gemstones with steel shot is a risk and is generally not recommended... play with caution.
Bright finish
High contrast, high shine, super smooth and buttery surfaces. A nice way to enhance metal that isn't heavily textured or coated with patina.
Aquamarine Earrings: After fabrication, these earrings were dipped in patina then tumbled for approximately six hours to create high contrast, round out the tips of the earwires, and soften the filed texture. High shine was achieved by following up for approximately one hour in steel shot. Stones were then set and bezels polished with a pumice wheel.
note: all stones must be set after tumbling with H&H
Gold Filled Earrings: After piercing and pinning, patina was applied with a brush only to the coils of the earwires. The earrings were then tumbled overnight in H&H Mini media, which created a satin shine, smoother surfaces, and rounded the clipped ends of the earwires. They were then rinsed and tumbled for approximately one hour in steel shot to increase the shine and lightly burnish the metal.
