2016 Workshop Schedule:

May 2-6: REBEL HEARTISTRYA Three Day Intensive on Metalsmithing and Mindfulness"- Round Top, TX

Day One

How do you cope with burnout? Conflict? What are ways we can channel that feeling of being creatively hollow into an immensely satisfying work of the hands and heart? In day one, we will take this literal issue and explore it through the realms of reading, journaling, conversation and of course, construction. Using sterling silver, students will learn the possibilities and procedures of building hollow forms, creating wearable vessels which hold a personal talisman. Through it all, we will focus inwardly on what drives our aesthetics, attempt to interpret our personal mythologies, and cultivate an artistic strength born of our gift for sensitivity.

Kit Fee: $75 and includes all necessary tools and raw materials. Students are encouraged to bring extra metal (any type and gauge) as well as any other items that inspire them (beads, cabochons, ribbon, chain, metal stamps, etc.). Students should also come with a sketchbook suitable for both drawing and writing.

Day Two

This will be part one in a pair of projects that come together during the final day of the workshop. How do you grow as an artist? How do you blossom into something that begins largely as a style inspired by others and unfurl into an independent voice with your own song and stance? In day two, students will use sterling wire and sheet to create an interpretive flower- a symbol of growth and expansion, both taking root and rising up into the world. We will focus heavily on soldering and finishing, and for the duration of the project, students will be encouraged to make deliberate design choices reflective of their personal aesthetics. The structure of class will be a gentle and guided push into individuality, with clear instructions and steps that are simultaneously flexible enough to allow for great diversity amongst each student’s work. By building upon technical skill and being forced to think on their feet, students will leave with a blooming representation of their growth along this artistic journey.

Day Three

How do we adapt to the world, as artists? How do we handle the constant influx of inspiration, third party opinions, criticisms, circumstances. How do we take the marks left on us by the universe and use them to make reMARKable work? Day Three of the workshop will pay homage to day two. Students will delve into an exploration of what they created and share in a critique with the class why their project looks the way it does, what it represents to them, and what their plans are for the future of the piece, be it bracelet, ring or pendant. From there, students will be guided through a series of demos designed to transform day two’s flower into a powerful, wearable symbol of adaptation and resilience, the culmination of which will be a poignant lesson- that good work can be done in honor AND in spite of life’s circumstances, and that we as women are capable of harnessing the strengths and sensitivities within ourselves to become the best creatives we can be… We, are Rebel Heartists.
