I remember sitting on the floor on the first day of Kindergarten. A shy kid in a dress. I was playing with those small fractal wooden blocks. Do you remember those? In geometric shapes. Large yellow hexagons, slender blue diamonds, green rectangles... or something like that. I think they called them "pattern blocks"?

My mind would drift, I suppose, but of course I don't remember what I would think of during those days. I would just play with the patterns, align the shapes in pleasing ways. Testing fits. Spinning and studying radial and axial symmetry long before I knew they were in existence. Mirroring. Masking. It was a sense of order and calm, a mathematical art form. It was an avenue inward and away from the loud classroom chatter and the children who frightened me.

Ah, the introvert.

I still do this. I do this with anything in a pile before me. Without thinking, arranging matches by the fireside. Toothpicks at the bar. Shells at the beach. Components at the bench. It's playful, and thoughtful. Deliberate. A series a trial and error until I find something that gives me that soft internal "click", signaling that all is solid and aesthetically well.

Here is my intentional tribute to an old habit. Focused on symmetry and structure, layering texture for depth and interest- all embracing the rich facets of rose cut sapphires- this piece is a working contradiction. Polished stone meets rustic, pastoral silver. Vivid color stands in stark contrast to the heavy wash of patina coating each setting. Sapphire, a precious gemstone, is toned down with a raw grade and untreated inclusions. It's the bringing together the vivacious and imperfect child with the proper adult.

May we make order of chaos, and find beauty in fragments. May we pull all of our lost and orphaned pieces together for the creation of something uniquely us, something wondrous, something structurally-spiritually-sanely whole.
